Bill Garden Canoe Yawl "Eel"

Peter Keyes, from Eugene, Oregon writes to tell me he is selling his Bill Garden designed canoe yawl.
You might remember seeing one of these fine double-enders in the story of the Sucia Island trip this summer. The cabin design is different on this boat, but that doesn't change the fact that it is one of the most beautiful little pocket cruisers I've ever seen.

Though Peter lives here in Oregon, he moors the Tappan Zee in Penn Cove, Whidbey Island, Washington every summer (Salish Sea). I can think of no better match than to see this boat on those waters.

Peter has provided a link to a picture album for Tappan Zee

4/04/2012 Peter Keyes checked in with an update: " Tappan Zee has moved on to her new owner, who lives on Lake Washington in Seattle, where Bill Gates can drool over her as she sails by. I sold her by wearing a tee-shirt with her photos and "For Sale" to the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival in September, 2011, which was spotted by someone who works with someone who had been looking for an Eel. He bought her the next week, and I delivered her to Seattle a month ago."

Tappan Zee:
William Garden designed "Eel", canoe yawl.
18.5' LOD
6' beam
1' draft, centerboard up.
1200 lb. displacement.

Built in 1983 by Schooner Creek Boatworks, Portland, Oregon. Cold-molded with three layers of western red cedar and the final layer strip-planked meranti mahogany.
The mainsail is gunter-rigged, which keeps all spars shorter than 18 feet, for simple trailering and rigging.

Lovely - shame it's so far away

I often feel that way about the boats you find.

She is indeed a very handsome boat, a shame she's so far away.

Thomas, this morning when I read Max's comment, my first thought was to say Thomas would love this boat too and wish she was closer. So you prove me right.
You approve of my aesthetic more than any other.

This boat could be yours and you could move to Coupeville. Not a bad idea.

Had an enjoyable conversation, during the Port Townsend boat fest, with Peter aboard my Quadrant sloop Oyster, which is also for sale (in case anyone out there wants to move up in scale), and we had a laugh over the idea of trading boats. Fascinating fellow, very enthusiastic; I have no doubt his boat is a fine craft.

An update: Tappan Zee has moved on to her new owner, who lives on Lake Washington in Seattle, where Bill Gates can drool over her as she sails by. I sold her by wearing a tee-shirt with her photos and "For Sale" to the Wooden Boat Festival last September, which was spotted by someone who works with someone who had been looking for an Eel. He bought her the next week, and I delivered her to Seattle a month ago.

As for myself, realizing the need for a bigger boat with a head for the girls, I finally decided to buy a Freedom 28 cat ketch. Found a beautiful one this winter in NY, and she is currently being hauled across the country to Whidbey Island. Fiberglass, but I think she is still a handsome boat, and one that I'm hoping to be able to sail for another 30 years or so.
