A Dory By Any Other Name

Out in the boatyard, we have a conundrum.

The famous Australian boat designer, Michael Storer was requested to design a boat for comfortable rowing in protected waters. What first came to mind?
"Of the modern, shorter, lightweight dories, the better ones of the modern kind paddle very easily but are tender until you have a load aboard and their speed is limited by the short waterline. The worse ones are so twitchy as to be almost useless."
And so the story goes. Dories can't handle rough seas. Dories are twitchy, hard to handle. Never own a flat-bottomed boat. Almost useless.

But when all is said and done, what emerges from Mr Storer's drawing board? I'll let you be the judge.
To be on the safe side, Michael has called his creation the MSD Rowing Skiff and Doryman has been commissioned to build one. From start to finish, I know well what it is, though I'll keep my thoughts to myself.

The MSD Rowing Skiff is a simple design with all the power and versatility of it's long heritage. Michael tells us this rowboat evolved from his Goat Island Skiff, which is also a time-honored sea-kindly vessel of a certain kind, well loved in these pages. Caution has been taken to be sure the MSD Rowing Skiff is not twitchy, is easy to handle, can hold up to a violent sea and goes like a yearling seal.

I'm not well versed in metric measurements, so the boat plans and I hit a hard spot right off. Rather than purchase a metric tape measure, I decided to struggle with conversions. Those of you with multi-amplitude will understand me completely when I say, metric measurements and the U.S. customary system are not compatible. What is a simple boatbuilder to do when 1 foot = 12003937 meters? Regardless, a fine rowing vessel has emerged, in the rough. We'll be following the progress of this worthy dory in the days and weeks to come.

Motor Sharpie,  Kingfisher

While we're on the subject of sharpies, I should mention - my good friend, the superlative boat builder/designer Lou Brochetti wants to sell his practically brand new motor sharpie. Sorry, I don't understand why. He gets a hankerin' to build a new boat from time to time, is all I can figure.







Two summers ago, Lou took this boat to the San Juan Islands, in Washington State. It was a brand new boat then and performed beautifully, just as planned. Well, Lou was tickled because, of course, it was his plan.




You may wonder why this is considered a sharpie. Well, I had that question too. Why not a semi-dory?










So, I've come to these conclusions. First, Lou knows what he's talking about. Second, a semi-dory (which is most often a motor dory) has a flat aft profile allowing it to plane. I owned a semi-dory once, with an old Evinrude 35 hp that would push it's heavy-built plywood hull up to a wide-open 25 mph! We called it the Bay Bomber. I swear it used a gallon per mile.












Lou's sharpie is slower and infinitely more efficient. It has quite a bit of rocker in the bottom, a narrow transom with very little interest in planing. With a 9.9 hp outboard, it burns a gallon of gas every four hours or so, at cruising speed, which is around six knots.











Lou's second trip in this boat was last summer on Franklin D Roosevelt Lake, which is behind Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River. According to him, it just might be one of the best cruising grounds in the world.













If you want an efficient motor driven gunkholer, you should call Lou. He has just the boat for you.

Preparation for the Sucia Rendezvous


Not much going on around here that has any romantic appeal. The Doryman boatyard is currently occupied by a ClipperCraft dory and a Bartender dory.


The ClipperCraft has a four cylinder Volvo engine that can power a two ton craft to speeds of 40 mph. The Bartender utilizes a 40 hp outboard to exceed speeds of 30 mph.


The modern offshore fisherman will rationalize the use of a vehicle that gets 5 miles per gallon by explaining that they need to get farther and farther offshore to fish.  

It costs over $200, American currency, to go out 50 miles and back in one day, so even if you catch your limit, the fish will cost far more than market value.
So what is the point to such extravagance?

I have no answer.





 Scraping and sanding. Will it ever end?







The redeeming  task of the day is preparation for a sail and oar trip in July. While I had hoped for completion of the Stone Horse project for this trip, that was not to be. Instead, the capable faering, Saga will once again traverse the waters of the northern Salish Sea. To that end, she has been completely repainted and outfitted as though she might commence a circumnavigation.

I have confidence in this little boat, the only reservation being that she is completely open. Sometimes the question is whether the skipper can take as much as the boat..



This year, Saga will sport a jib.

Recently, a reader found exception to the gear on Saga. The complaint was that the design by William Atkin did not call for deadeyes on the shrouds and that such an extravagance was nothing but fluff. Mr. Atkin was adamant that his designs should not be altered, but if there were one perfect design, there would be only one boat.


We've cut down an old sail to fit the worthy faering as a storm jib. I have only a theoretical idea how this might affect performance.








We will see, won't we?

Building a John Gardner Bank Dory


We've been working on this project for about a month now. The young people building the Bank Dory don't get much time out of their day to play in shop class, building boats. There are now six students, five boys and one girl.

They come and go at various times, which they tell me are the class periods, but what do I know? I'm sure some of them take advantage of my ignorance of their system.

No one in this group knew anything about using hand tools a month ago, much less power tools. They've learned quickly, and I'm very happy with them.








They may be having a bit too much fun, we get warning glances and occasional comments from the teacher.

Work should be fun. Learning should be fun.





We're fitting the bottom and the keel right now. Next week is spring break and a vacation for Doryman, during which time he will scramble to get caught up with a backlog of work.







The first local boat show of the year, in Depoe Bay, Oregon is coming up in a month and my good friend Rick Johnson and I will be building a clinker nutshell pram as a demonstration, so we need to get that set up soon.

Building a John Gardner Banks Dory


The industrial arts teacher at the Toledo, Oregon(US) high school asked me to teach his kids to build a boat.
"What design?" I asked.
"Your choice."

What's a doryman to do? Why, build a dory of course!

So that's what we'll do, in fact, a Banks dory, as detailed by John Gardner in his fabulous "Dory Book".

I was told that there would be a couple young people, probably juniors or seniors and that they would have wood working skills, so we could concentrate on boat design and the building process.

...high schools have become encampments of refugees. The inhabitants don't want to be there and there are so few teachers and support staff on the ground that you might think there weren't any. Apparently they don't see many volunteers either and a sucker can be spotted from miles away...

So...
over a four hour period, I have six boys. All but two are freshmen and none of them have ever worked with a tool in their lives. They have the math skills of eight-year-olds. I am so glad I'm here! Obviously these young fellows need some guidance.
They are great people. And a boat building class is just what they need.

Though they did not sign up voluntarily and hardly know what a boat is, after two weeks these guys are really interested in what we are doing and anxious to learn. I feel honored. It's apparent that some of them have never had this kind of focused attention before.


One of my boys was described to me as having special needs and was very reticent at first, but he has opened up so remarkably that the teacher is amazed. He has a very hard time with the tools, but struggles mightily and has a very high standard of success. We have a limited number of tools, so a bit of competition has developed over who can do the best job, while the others watch.





The teacher of these classes raised the money for his shop from the community and over the last four years the students have assisted in building their own facility.

Every bit of scrap wood and metal from the new building has been salvaged for use in the classes, which teach metal working and wood working simultaneously. The frame for our dory is made from the recycled wood the kids have cleaned up and sorted for just such a use.





We've spent the last two weeks building a ladder frame and setting up stations.
Hopefully this frame will remain in the shop for future boat building crews. My guys will be making full sized patterns to simplify the next build. Who knows? Maybe some of them will mentor other students and go on to be dorymen themselves!

DoryMan goes over to the Dark Side


From all the time I spend here ranting about the evils of the internal combustion engine, you might think I detest motor boats. But that is not exactly true. The petrol engine is a blight, make no mistake. As are land based vehicles based on the infernal engine.

Which is a shame when one encounters a beautiful hull design driven by, of all things, a gas engine!







This is a "take off" of the famous BarTender from the 1950's, made by a Portland, Oregon company; Clipper Craft and was called a BarClipper. You might say that is an obvious rip-off and you would be right. The production of the BarClipper was cut short by George Calkins because it was just too close to his popular design.

It is a dory and for those who don't share my prejudice, it's a coveted surf boat design popular with ocean sport fishermen. I heard about this boat from Eric.
I have had the pleasure of corresponding for the last few months with Eric, who is building a ClipperCraft of a different design, more typical of the company. He contacted me because I worked for ClipperCraft about twenty years ago.
Though the dory is well suited for motor propulsion, a prejudice is still a prejudice. If a boat requires 50 gallons (or more) of fuel for a day's halibut fishing, it is simply not worth it, in my humble opinion!


That said, when Eric contacted me about Sparta to tell me she was to be given away, or scrapped, I couldn't resist. She is a fine design, pleasing to the eye and extremely efficient, driven by a 40 horsepower Grey Marine engine that is sixty years old, if a day.
I couldn't let her die!

I will probably not keep this boat, but will see her back to health. Ideally, she should be outfitted with an electric motor. Her hull design is efficient enough. That may be a dream for now, but as the infernal engine proves to be a dinosaur, maybe Sparta will live to see a new age.




The line drawing is of the BarTender from which this design was taken. The BarClipper is a foot longer, at 20'-6" and eight inches wider, at 7'-6"
Sparta is built of mahogany marine grade plywood and is a testament to the durability of that material. When I worked for ClipperCraft, we fastened the boats with stainless screws and Resourcinal glue, which is, I suspect, the same for this boat.

Building the Iain Oughtred Ness Yawl




Remember last May (2008) I posted about the Iain Oughtred Ness Yawl? It was a new design to me, by a designer I love. My friend Chuck is the builder/ owner of "Selkie" and has graciously contributed his own words to the DoryMan blog:





 "I’m flattered by your interest in Selkie, my Oughtred Ness Yawl. At the same time, I completely understand – Iain Oughtred has both the artist’s eye and designer’s mind. I note that Iain’s own boat is a Ness Yawl, which I consider a strong endorsement!"

"Selkie started, as many boats do, as a discussion between friends – in this case, Jamie Orr, of Victoria, BC, and myself. We had both competed in the first Shipyard Raid, from Silva Bay, Gabriola Island, BC to Port Townsend, in 2005. Jamie and I have been friends for years, sharing an interest in our Bolger Chebaccos – Jamie’s Wayward Lass and my Full Gallop. While both boats are similar, they are also expressions of their masters, with different detailing and rigs, but both true to the designer’s intentions. It was in these boats that we both participated in the ‘05 Raid."

"In the winter of ’06, we were discussing the upcoming Raid, the ideal raidboat, and the fun we’d had. As one thing led to another, we decided that the right thing for us to do was to enter in ’07, only as a team instead of competing against one another. As the Emeritus team, we’d bring our superior intelligence and experience to bear!"

"It was clear that neither of us wanted to row a Chebacco 100 miles again, and so I offered that, if James would agree to crew, I’d build a Ness Yawl, which we both agreed would be a serviceable raid boat. She’d carry a modest load, sail in any blow, and row well enough (we’d rowed a majority of the time in the ’05 raid, with the wind on our nose for most of the trip)."

"I ordered plans, and started work in February, ’07. Almost 6 months to the day later, we launched Selkie on the North shore of Vancouver Island and rowed for Silva Bay on Gabriola Island. It had been a forced march for me, with assistance from Jamie and a friend, Alan Woodbury, who donated Pete Culler-pattern square loom oars, sewed the Sailrite balanced lugsail and mizzen kits (as well as a custom drifter jib we rigged) and drove from Canada to spend a long weekend building spars at my boatshop in Fall Creek, Oregon. The effort had taken most of my after-work time, as well as almost full time efforts on weekends, but as the pictures show, the effort was worth it."




"Oughtred’s glued-ply lapstrake construction was initially suspect to me; I wasn’t sure how to lay out the planks and account for the curve of the planks when scarfing the plywood. Information on the web was mixed; everyone had their own ideas, and none of the descriptions were clear. On the other hand, other builders reported only minimal confusion, and had worked out their own methods for resolving the many questions I had."


"Oughtred’s planset included full-size patterns for molds and stems; setup was in the conventional manner. I have an embarrassment of high-quality African mahogany lumber, which became the stems, keel, and other solid-lumber components."


"I developed a method for patterning the planks using inexpensive hardboard paneling ripped to 12” widths; each piece was temporarily clamped to the molds, with the adjoining piece overlapped and screwed to the first. This made a full-length piece composed of 3-4 12” wide ‘planks’ screwed to each other with sheetrock screws. From the underside, I scribed the critical points, such as plank lands, keel, etc. I was then able to gently remove the attached sheets, “connect the dots”, and describe the shape of the “real” plank from the pattern."


"I decided to trace and cut the pattern material to shape, tho I could have picked up the shape on the real planks by pricking through the pattern. By cutting the patterns out, I was able to test them on the molds to ensure their shape was accurate, and I didn’t mind cutting the inexpensive pattern material to ensure a proper fit."

"I was able to economically cut 9 mm okume plywood into rough planks, place the patterns on them, and plot the shape and location of the scarfs on the real planks. I built a jig to cut scarfs with my skilsaw, which resulted in quick and accurate scarfs. I’m glad I decided to build the jig, as the planking required something like 36 scarf cuts, and the jig ensured that each one was near-perfect with little effort. I then fit and glued the scarfs, re-traced the pattern from the inexpensive pattern stock, and cut the final planks, two at a time, port and starboard."

"Many lap-ply builders go to great length to explain techniques for developing a good beveled land for the next plank; I found this very simple, scribing a pencil line 1” in from the bottom of the installed plank, and using a handsaw to pick up the approximate bevel, making small cuts on that plank edge every 12” or so. I power-planed this bevel to the approximate angle, and finished with a hand plane. Laying out and planning the bevel took 15 minutes per side, max. The planking progress fairly rapidly, using System3 resins and sanderdust filler."




"I built clamps according to Iain’s plan, included in the drawings, to clamp the planks. These clever wedged clamps were a key to success, as they quickly pulled the planks tight, and their low cost meant that you could make 20 or 30 of them to keep you moving."







"The rest of the story is pretty straight-forward, but it does the process a disservice to call it routine; I greatly enjoyed a long weekend visit from Jamie and Alan to lay out and mill the spars, which we made from Khaya mahogany. Lacking readily available spruce, the Khaya was light and strong, and made a handsome set of 2 masts, a boom, a sprit, and a yard. The project also required a significant daily effort to meet the deadline for the Raid. As a project manager, I took the time to carefully schedule the tasks, and worked hard to meet my interim milestones.

In the end, the project came out almost precisely on schedule."


"Selkie has several designer-approved modifications, as well as some un-approved ones. I wrote to Mr. Oughtred regarding seating to accommodate 2 rowers, instead of the one rowing position shown in the plans.





He promptly replied with a pen-and-ink sketch and narrative, outlining how an additional station could be added, but also indicated that his preferred raiding arrangement was for his crew to row, and him to steer from the stern!"






"Other options include a steel centerplate, instead of wooden centerboard, since I anticipated single-handing the boat much of the time, post-raid, and the 100# plate would add stability and security. I also built a removable wishbone-type bowsprit to carry the 50 s.f. drifter jib Jamie designed and sewed. In the end, this was a huge asset on the Raid, as we found that rowing with the jib and mizzen was perhaps our fastest mode; trying to row with the mainsail was difficult, as the heel of the boat made rowing almost impossible."

"We tracked out Raid performance closely via GPS, and could easily row 3.5 kts for extended periods – hours, in fact – without any sails. This isn’t bad for a couple of 50+ year old office jockeys. We reached 5 kts under sail on occasion, which would be about hull speed for this design. And, while we didn’t win the Raid (we were 4th of 9) we were the most photographed. Selkie is a joy to sail and look at, lean, graceful elegant and fast. I find her without fault. Her RED lugsail is unmistakable, and she is complimented wherever she goes. I recently added a fabricated motor mount for my 2 hp Honda, which, while not in keeping with her classic lines, does help when cruising. However, she rows so well that using the motor feels like a loss, as she easily makes her way with 1 or 2 rowers, even over long distances."


The design of the JII Ness Yawl is drawn from the Shetland Yoals. Initially, these boats were imported to the Shetland Islands from Norway, and then assembled by local builders. They were of lapstrake construction that dates to the Vikings.

The Ness Yoals became a popular boat for inshore fishing, averaging 21 feet over all, with a 5 foot 5 inch beam. They were rowed by a crew of three men with a pair of oars each. Hence the name Sixareen. When the wind was right, they raised a single lug-rigged square sail.

The boat designs from Iain Oughtred retain many of the desirable qualities for both rowing and sailing. Built of high quality marine plywood and employing glue lapstrake construction, they are lighter in weight and move easily on the water. When matched with other boats in the "Raids" they have proven to be fast and seaworthy.
